Herp a Derp

Well I realize that I have been talking about some of my 2 best friends friends a lot.  I’m stealing this idea from Meghan and doing an intro thingy-ma-jig.
JEN
imageThis is Jen! She’s from Minnesota and she’s an English major.  She’s a senior like me and lives right across the hallway.  We met on the first day here and quickly became very good friends.  Her hobbies include: not going to sleep until 6am, watching Friends with me, singing, playing the piano, blogging (http://jennifersaemi.blogspot.com/), pinterest, shopping, and being an all around great friend :)

MEGHAN
imageShe is also an English major and lives in the newer part of Grizedale.  She’s from the West coast of Canada and is also an English major.  Meghan is a 3rd year and I met her only a few weeks ago!!  Her hobbies include: reading and having good taste in books, asking me to go on last minute trips to Manchester, making cheese toasties and tea, being a Habs fan, blogging (http://inkingaway.wordpress.com/), enjoying when I stroke her ego, and being a wonderful friend!!! I can’t believe how close we have gotten in just a few short weeks :)  Also, we’re planning on writing letters to each other, since Meghan is spending will be spending the entire year here.
Well there you have it! My two best friends here and could not have asked for better friends :) WE HUG EACH OTHER!!!! The English don’t really do the whole hugging thing so whenever we see each other we get our hugs in.  I remember Meghan and I talking about this the other night and how much we miss hugs.  I went over to her room when her computer was crashing and freaking out and gave her a big hug! The 3 of us hang out a lot and I love it! I am going to miss them so much, but I’m planning on writing letters to Meghan and hopefully visiting Jen in Minneapolis.  There seem to be a lot of interesting jobs in Minneapolis so I’ll also go to check out the city and if I could see myself living there.
Random thing that I think I forgot to mention in my blog post last night.  I have never felt more comfortable in a city than I did in London this weekend.  I felt more comfortable in London than I did in Buffalo!  I don’t know what exactly it was, but I just walked around and felt very at home.  I think part of it was that by the end of the weekend, I had the tube completely figured out.  I couldn’t tell you how to get from one of Buffalo to the other. I really, really love London and the energy that it has.  Who knows, hopefully I will make it back there someday and stay longer!  *fingers crossed*
Have a good one :)

Dreams came true :)

Well it's official...I have caved and I am currently listening to Christmas music. At least I'm keeping it classy by listening to the Boston Pops, Buffalo Philharmonic and Mannheim Steamroller!

Where do I even begin with this weekend?? Jen and I were up and out by 7:30 am and caught the train to London.  The entire ride there I was really worried about making the Top Gear Live show on time.  Our train would arrive at 11:04 and then it would take at least a half hour to get to the ExCel center with no traffic.  Seeing as it was a Saturday morning, I thought there would be a lot of traffic. The show started at noon and they said they wouldn't let people in once it started.  I knew I would probably be fine, but I hate not having an adequate amount of time to get there with no problems.

We got into Euston and I RAN to the taxi pick up and there was a long queue.  It was about 10 minutes before I got into one and we were off!! My taxi driver was so nice :).  He was asking me were I was off to and we talked about Top Gear for a while.  He asked what my other plans were and I said something about getting some food and then going for a pint somewhere.  He said "Half pint! Ladies do not have pints.  And if you were my young lady I would not let you have one."  I laughed and he told me about the different parts of London we were going through.  We got there with 15 minutes to spare but the place was HUGE!!!! Not only did the ExCel center hold the Top Gear Live Action Arena, the Exhibition and the indoor track, it was also holding a few other sporting events (including fencing).  But I made it down to the Live Action Arena and joined the massive crowd going inside.

Once I was inside, I worked my way round to block 19 and I'm pretty sure I was skipping at one point!!! I COULDN'T BELIEVE I WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO SEE MY FAVORITE TV SHOW LIVE!!!!! I made it up to my seat and I was pleasantly surprised with my view.  I was in the last row on the left side of the performance area, but I still could see quite well and it seemed like all the seats were good! The lights soon dimmed and some Citroen cars came out to advertise the Top Gear Car of the Year the Citroen DS3.  They did a bunch of hand-brake turns and other fancy work.  After that, some other cars came out to advertise something else.

FINALLY, they played a video on the two huge screens with some of the best clips from Top Gear and the guys saying random things :).  After that, some bikers came out and were going off the big jump in the middle of the arena.  A few more cars came out and were mucking about with their fancy driving skills! It was good fun, but then a Black taxi and a red Double-decker bus come out and start power sliding all over the place!!! I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU CAN GET A DOUBLE DECKER TO FLICK IT'S REAR END OUT LIKE THAT. I'm sure they used weights or something...but still!!! After they went off, a really nice Aston Martin came out to play but then went away and THE GUYS CAME OUT on a motorized version of their stage in Top Gear with the car seat couch and chair.  I took a video of them introducing each other and I'm pretty sure I thought I was dreaming.  I couldn't believe that they were really there and picking on each other as usual.  AHHHHHH!!!! (Yes I'm smiling like a goof at my computer just remembering it all).

Now I could launch into a huge recap of everything they did...but that would take forever and I have lots of other things to talk about! So basic summary: Jezza, Hamster and Captain Slow decided to do their own version of the Olympics with sports that should be included or had been improved!  These included: motorized limbo, curling, chariot racing, splat the rat, hurdling, synchronized swimming, and the beauty pageant! My favorite part was definitely curling!! If you want to know more about these just drop me a line in my inbox :) I can probably send you a video of it as well :D Jezza did end the show with a bomb shell!

After that I headed out to Exhibition.  I meant to go change my track time since I had missed it but I couldn't find the table where you could do that.  But the exhibition was AMAZING!!!! IT WAS HUGE!!!!! They had Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Aston Martins, Audis, McLarens, a Bugatti Veyron, Morgans, Ariels, and a bunch of other cars! See my facebook picture album for all the hot, sexy cars!! They also had a bunch of games that you could play...but they cost money.  They also had 2 virtual simulators: the first was the Michael Schumacher Grand Prix experience and the Top Gear experience...but they were 6 quid each so I passed on that.  I found the Top Gear Merchandise shop and bought a lot of stuff.  I got a t-shirt, a few programs, and a couple keychains. There were also a bunch of stands that were selling everything including Ferrari and Lamborghini merchandise, pillow pets, racing chairs, and RC helicopters! In the back corner there was a small track where you could drive around in a Ford Fiesta.  I thought about doing this...but since I STILL don't know how to drive stick, I decided against it.

But...across from the Ford track...was the most amazing stand I came across.  They were selling copies of Richard Hammond's (my favorite of the 3 Top Gear Presenters..who is very fit) DVD where he and Sir Stirling Moss talk about their racing crashes and their subsequent brain injuries.  This one lady comes over to me and asks if I'm a Richard Hammond fan and I manage to stutter out that indeed I was a HUGE Richard fan! She said "Oh, well he's doing a signing at 4:15 if you want to meet him and get this DVD signed." She said this like it was an everyday, no big deal type of thing. She obviously didn't know that she had in fact just made my day? No...my week!...no MY WHOLE ENTIRE FREAKING LIFE!!!!! I am pretty sure I stood there like an idiot while she told me the details and sold me the DVD, which would get me a spot in line, for 10 quid.  I called my mom right away and screamed into the phone that I was going to meet Richard Hammond!!!!!!!!!!! I'm pretty sure I started tearing up a little I WAS SO FREAKING HAPPY! It was close to 2pm then so I texted Jen and told her I would meet up with her after and I couldn't miss this for the world.  She texted back and said she would be mad if I didn't stay for the signing. She's wonderful like that!

I wandered around the exhibition for the next hour and a half in a bit of a trance.  I couldn't comprehend the fact that I was really going to meet Richard Hammond.  I looked at all of the cars that they had brought from previous Top Gear challenges including: 2 of the cars from the Middle East special, the one "police car" from the police car challenge, Jezza's scooter and the American alternative bike from Vietnam, and lots of other ones!

Around twenty to 4, I headed back over to the stand and got in line.  I quickly made friends with a teenage English guy and another boy with his mum.  We all talked about how awesome the day was and later on the English guy was saying to me "You know what you should do when you meet Hamster? You should grab his face and kiss him!"  I stroked my chin with an evil grin on my face and then said "But how many security guards do you think would pile on top of me?"  Without missing a beat he said, "Wouldn't it be worth it!?!" I said "OF COURSE!!!!"  We talked about some other stuff, like why was there a pillow pets stand and how Hammond was going to make his grand entrance?  I think our ideas got as mad as a human-sized hamster ball that was bomb-proof that was led by a bunch of hamsters.  We said that if that happened, we would kidnap Hammond and jump back in the Hamster ball since no one would be able to destroy it or get in.  Finally, he did arrive :) OH HE WAS SO MUCH HOTTER IN PERSON...and so much shorter.  He may look small on TV since he's standing next to the massive Jeremy Clarkson...but he is actually tiny, at least 3 inches shorter than me!  We finally got up to the front.  He said Hello to me, signed the cover of the DVD, smiled for a picture and I was ushered off so the next person could get in there.  It was probably 20 seconds...if that.  BUT I MET RICHARD HAMMOND!!!!!!!!!!!!

It still feels like it was only a dream...
But I had to snap back into reality and get back to London to meet up with Jen.  I walked over to the underground station and stared at the map for the Tube. I think I stared at it for 5 minutes without making any sense of it!  If you don't know why...

I bought a day pass and figured I would just take the DLR north and figure it out on the train.  After getting off in a super sketchy area and asking one of the transportation guys for help, I finally figured out the Tube.  He showed me where to change to get to Maryleborne...but I ended up being able to figure it out for when the Jubilee line ended up going down due to power outages.  Between lines that were closed and having no cell phone service in most of the stations, it took us 2 hours to finally decide and meet up in Euston. We walked to our hotel, the Americana hotel and got checked in.  It was small but good for one night.  We looked up a place to go eat and walked 20 minutes to the Golden Hind for fish and chips.  It was really good! On the way back we decided to pick up a bottle of wine.  We got back to our hotel and enjoyed our wine while watching Friends on Jen's laptop.  We decided to go to bed early so we could be up and out early in the morning.

The next morning we got up and had breakfast downstairs in our hotel.  We checked out and made our way to the Sherlock Holmes museum! It was at 221B Baker Street!  The museum was actually a full mock-up of Holmes' flat! They had his pipes, hats, detective instruments, and lots of cool stuff.  They also had different instruments and weapons that were in some of the stories.  They had this binder with letters that people had written to Sherlock and there was one from this little boy in Miami.  It was adorable!!!  The museum was really cool :)

After that we took the tube over to Buckingham Palace.  While we were walking through Green Park towards the Palace it started raining!  Luckily it didn't last too long.  The palace was beautiful! We got there about an hour before the changing of the guard ceremony and saw some of the soldiers on horses riding around the palace.  We didn't stay for the ceremony since we wanted to see lots of other things.  We took the tube over to Westminster and saw Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the tower that holds Big Ben.  We walked over to the London Eye, but it cost 18 quid so we decided not to go on it.  We walked back over the bridge and walked along Parliament street and found this little Italian place for lunch.  My club sandwich had avocado, brie, bacon and lettuce on it...so good!! We headed down Parliament Street and saw 10 Downing Street.  We walked on and found this archway where 2 guards on horses were standing and people were taking pictures with them.  Jen and I decided to get a picture together, and I stood next to the guy on the horse and he started kind of kicking me!  Jen thinks that I could have been standing too close to him, but really?

We walked on and crossed over a bridge where we came upon the Christmas market!! All these little sheds were covered in greenery and christmas decor and were selling everything from watches to candles to outdoor wind ornaments! There was a lot of good food as well. We came across a crepe stand and had to stop and get one.  I got a dark Belgian chocolate crepe and it was an explosion of wonderfulness in my mouth! SO DELICIOUS! :) We walked on and after lots and lots of walking, finally made it to Shakespeare's Globe theater.  We took pictures and then walked over the Millennium bridge (the one that Death Eaters destroyed in HBP).

We took the tube from there down to Tower hill to take pictures of Tower bridge.  We were both beyond exhausted at this point since we were also carrying really heavy backpacks.  We took the tube up to Kings Cross so we could take pictures at Platform 9 3/4. I put on my Sabres jersey for this picture so I could send it into the Sabres Scrapbook where they show pictures of people with Sabres swag around the world before every home game.  Even though we had a few hours to kill, we took the train to Euston and hung out there until our train home. It felt really good to lay down and go to sleep that night.

Well, that was my most amazing weekend ever!!! :) I took around a half hour worth of video at Top Gear Live so I'll be working on compiling that into one massive video of AWESOME!!! I hope you all enjoyed your weekends!! :) :) :)

P.S. I apologize for more grammar errors than usual...it's 1:30 am here and I started writing around midnight. SO! ^o^zzzzzzzzzz excuse me while I go sleep :D

21st birthday and Thanksgiving :)

Well it has certainly been a fun few days!!!!  On the night of my 21st birthday Ciara ran into my room pretty much right at midnight and wished me a happy birthday :) Jen and Jude soon followed suit and we were hanging out until about 1:30 am.  Ciara gave me an advent calendar with a chocolate that said my name on it for Christmas Day! (I’ll probably have to eat it before though).
imageI woke up around 9:30 and opened my door.  Much to my surprise, my door was covered with tissue paper and I would not be allowed out of my room! I said “Oh my god” and then I heard Jen and Meghan yell “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!”  They told me I had to run through the tissue paper to get out, but first had to put on the proper attire.  They gave me a huge 21st birthday button and a sash to match!  I ran through the tissue paper and we all had a good laugh :).  They had a card that my entire flat signed and they gave me a bunch of rice pudding!!!! Meghan also bought these delicious raisin scones!! They actually got up at 6:30 to decorate my door and had been waiting in Jen’s room since then, waiting for me to get my lazy butt out of bed.
After class, I went back to my room.  Jen, Meghan and I had planned on going into town to buy food for thanksgiving tomorrow but Jen was still sleeping by the time I got back.  I was talking to Meghan and we were both hungry so she said to come over for a cheese toastie.  As soon as I walked in, she said “Would you like to go to Manchester tonight??? I just found out one of my favorite authors is doing a signing there tonight!”  Me being me, I said “OF COURSE!!! I love impromptu trips!”  So she looked up and called about tickets and we got that all squared away and bought train tickets (10 quid return each!). Then we ate and Jen came over.  Our train was leaving at 4:30 (It was already 2pm) so we didn’t have much time to go into town so we decided instead to finish watching Pride and Prejudice.
Meghan and I went to the train station (ended up walking from the bus station since we missed the right stop) and got on the train to Manchester.  Meghan was already freaking out and really excited :-) We changed trains in Preston and I got my usual Italian (tomato, mozzarella, and basil) sandwich and hot chocolate! We got on the train from Preston to Manchester and I finished my hot chocolate but there were lots of yummy chocolate bits at the bottom.  Meghan had gotten tea and so I asked for some of her hot water.  Chocolate tea? DELICIOUS!!! I should patent it! Haha.  We did some work on the way there.
We got off at Deansgate and then realized we had no idea how to get to Waterstones where Brandon Sanderson would be doing a reading and a signing.  So we set off to try and find a map and I found an Alfa Romeo shop.  Yup…they are still ugly as ever! We then found a map and texted Jen to give us directions.  We walked along Deansgate and it was really pretty.  They had Christmas decorations up.  It did feel kind of weird seeing Christmas decorations without any snow or cold (it was about 55). We took pictures along the way and stopped in a Sainsburys to top up our phones and get some chocolate. We ended up walking out of Sainsburys and down the wrong road for about 10 minutes before we turned around and found the right road.
We found Waterstones and walked up to where the reading and signing would take place.  This is where Meghan began to really freak out! I know I would have been if it had been me going to a JK Rowling or Dan Brown signing.  Brandon Sanderson was a really cool guy and quite funny.  He did a reading from a novella that he is currently working on and then did a Q & A. After that we all queued up and I got one of his stand-alone books signed that I purchased that night. I haven’t read much of it yet, but so far it’s quite a good read! He’s a fantasy writer. Meghan was BUGGING OUT when she met him but did a great job! She was able to form complete and coherent sentences!!!!! I was so proud of her :-P  On our way out, she asked if she could have the one poster board that said Brandon Sanderson signing on it and the nice Waterstones employee let her have it. After that we walked back to the train station, and I’m pretty sure Meghan wanted to skip all the way back.

The train back was fun, we took more random pictures and Meghan was still trying to calm down.  When we got back to Lancaster we walked back to the bus station.  We walked by the Castle and the Abbey.  It was raining pretty good but I still took pictures :) It was so cool! We got back around 11pm.  On the bus back to Uni, we sat on the top deck of a doubler decker at the very front.  There was a mirror there that the bus driver used to keep see if people are coming down to get off or not.  We ended up using this mirror to take lots and lots of pictures. I bet the bus driver was entertained by our antics :-P.

At some point that night on the train back we talked about how I was a super hero and my name is Super Birthday Girl! I only have powers on my birthday.  We had planned on doing a fun photo shoot when we got back but it was WAY too rainy and we were drenched.  We got back to Grizedale and then went out for drinks with Jen, Jude and Greg. I had a Guinness as my first drink as a 21 year-old!  I almost wanted to ask them to ID me just because, but decided against it.  Jude and Greg ended up getting in this argument over something to do with taxes.  I told Meghan that we had to be proper and drink with our pinkies out.  Meghan later left to go to sleep and Greg left to go prep for an interview.  Jen, Jude and I went for a walk and talked about a lot of stuff.  It was a nice birthday :) After that we all headed back to go to sleep.
The next morning, Meghan and I woke up to go into town for some shopping.  We went to New Look and bought some new clothes. Then we went shopping for Thanksgiving dinner.  I got turkey breasts and a huge drumstick, potatoes, green beans, stuffing, and a bunch of other supplies.  We headed back to Uni and I started working on dinner.  Jen and Jude helped me with the potatoes and I made a garlic herb crust for some of the turkey.  We ended up having turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, roast vegetables, mashed potatoes, and yams.  Ciara, her friend from London, Jen, Meghan, Shaun, Greg, Jude and I all crowded around the table and enjoyed Thanksgiving together :) I had to make the toast and I didn’t know what to say other than “Thanks for a great term and let’s enjoy the rest of it!” It felt really nice that we all sat down and had dinner together.  We ended up eating and talking for an hour and a half! It was awesome X-D
After dinner, everyone headed out to do work.  Jen, Meghan and I went to the Learning Zone to get some work done and stayed until 12:30.  Today I had my EU seminar and my IPE lecture and Seminar.  Now I’m back in the Learning Zone with my 2 best friends here and writing this instead of working on my essays.  That’s okay though, I had to get this out of my head first! Tomorrow, Jen and I are going to London and I’M SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR TOP GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T EVEN COMPREHEND THE FACT THAT I’M REALLY GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Meghan told me that I have to take a picture of my face when I’m freaking out.  Haha we can compare freak out faces from when she was at the signing :) We also found out that there is an ice bar in London about 20 minutes from our hotel.  We’re definitely going tomorrow night!!! It should be a great weekend.  But now I have to try and accomplish some work so I can really enjoy it!
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!!! <3

Weird and strange differences:

1. The peace sign we make at home with two fingers like a “V.” I’m pretty sure at one point or another someone said that’s the international sign of peace.  Well, I guess it shows how “peaceful” English people are because here it’s the same as flipping some one off! I still sometimes do it when I’m leaving out of habit and Greg yells at me.  Oi veh.  The first time he told me that I thought he was yanking my chain, but no.  It really is the same as telling someone to F$$$ off.
2. “You alright?” Now, as a typical American girl, I was rather perplexed when a few shopkeepers and people would say this to me.  Do I look upset or something??? No no no, it’s there version of saying “Hey. How are you?”  If you say to an English person “What’s up?” or something like that, then it’s the same as if you asked me “You alright?”  I’m still getting used to it.  You’re supposed to respond to “You alright?” with “Alright?” …yeah I don’t get it either.  I still have 4 weeks to get it down though!
3.  When you’re ordering a burger, the lettuce, tomato and onion (and whatever else) is called “salad.”  So when I go to Wibbly Wobbly for a yummy lamb burger they’ll ask me if I want any sauce (ketchup, mayo, etc.) and then any salad (tomato, onion, pickles, etc.)
Toastie maker
4. Chips = french fries and Crisps = potato chips  BUT they do call curly fries “curly fries.”  I asked someone once why they don’t call them curly chips and they said “That just sounds stupid.”
5. Cheese toastie = grilled cheese.  Jen and I have gotten a lot of crap for calling it a grilled cheese since we usually make it in a frying pan rather on a grill.  We also get yelled at for not using the toastie maker.
6.  They don’t eat a lot of Peanut Butter over here and it’s no wonder why! The PB here is awful! It’s not as creamy and peanut-y tasting.  They also don’t have extra crunchy :-P  My flatmate Jude said that he has never actually had  a PB&J sandwich! :-O That is my mission before I leave.
7.  Speaking of PB&J, don’t call it jelly, call it jam.   Jelly over here is the same as Jell-o at home, and they don’t have “jell-o” over here.
8.  Don’t make any reference to pants unless you’re among friends…it means underwear.  I’ve heard several stories about American students saying they are cold and should have put pants on while out and about.  This statement was quickly followed by strange stares from everyone that heard them say that.
Hmmm that’s all I can think of now.

Chocolate vs. Oranges

  • Carolyn
    • I’ve never had it so I’m game!
    • omg too much chocolate
  • Meghan
    • It’s good….
  • Carolyn
    • dasdisaodiojasdoijsa
  • Meghan
    • It’s melted your brain!
    • Quick!
    • Eat an orange.
  • Carolyn
    • why an orange?
    • lol
  • Meghan
    • Well clearly the acidic properties of the orange will fuse your melting brain together.
  • Carolyn *RUNS TO GET ORANGE*
    • will a clementine work?
  • Meghan
    • And orange is the opposite colour to green - which is the colour of the fluid that leaks out of your ears when your spinal cord gets broken and your brain really dies so…
    • yeah. My brain is weird.
    • I’m sure it will.
  • Time for the rambling girl

I have decided that I needed to post about RANDOM things…so enjoy :D
    1.  I did laundry last week and it was SUCH A FAILURE! For one college here (remember there are 8 colleges for 12,000 students) they have 6 washers and 6 dryers.  Oh wait, and they only have 4 places to do laundry on campus. CRAZY RIGHT??? It also costs 1.70 pounds for a washer and 1 pound for the dryer.  I was so spoiled in Geneseo with my free laundry and 6 washers and dryers for every 150 students.  *sigh* ANYWAYS…I put in my load of laundry (including dark purple Lancaster hoodie and my Sabres jersey) and hit the button for bright colors.  I left to go entertain myself while the laundry gods decided to wreak havoc upon my clothes.  I come back and end up waiting an extra 10 minutes for the washer to decide whether or not it ever wants to stop washing my clothes.  I go to transfer them to the dryer and they are soaking wet! I tried to ring them out as best as I could and threw them into the dryer.  I started the machine and went back to my room.  50 minutes later I go back and the laundry gods had a good laugh.  My clothes were warm…but still wet!!! :-O WHAT??? I didn’t have enough change to put them back in the dryer so I put them in my bag and went to my room.
Carrying wet laundry up 4 flights of stairs = no fun. I get up to my room and begin hanging all of my clothing on anything and everything! I actually put several of my tank tops on the handle on my window.  I kept it upright using a rubber band attached to a little button above the handle.  It worked quite well! I didn’t have enough space on my window to hang everything though.  I put all my socks on my radiator and then used the measuring tape from my sewing kit as a makeshift clothesline.  It was a very entertaining sight with clothes EVERYWHERE!!
    2.  Meghan, Jen and I have been hanging out and watching Pride and Prejudice the past few nights.  Meghan lives in the Grizedale townhouses and they are so nice!!! I laugh every time I see the post-it on their door that says “The Penthouse!” Her flatmates Toby and Matt are good fun! Jen, Meghan, Matt and I randomly started reading Shakespeare at one point!  Meghan is from Canada, so the 3 girls were trying to read it with British accents.  We were actually doing so well that Matt (who is from England) was saying he needed to work on his accent!  Then things took a turn and we started reading it in Southern US accents.  Listening to a British guy reading Shakespeare with a southern accent IS THE BEST THING EVER! The videos that Jen took make me giggle every time :)
After our antics and eating dinner (butternut squash soup that Meghan made!) the girls retired to Meghan’s room to watch Pride and Prejudice.  We’re watching the best version, the 1995 mini series with Colin Firth playing Mr. Darcy *sighs and smiles* I have to re-read P & P soon because I forgot how amazing it is :-) Mr. Bennett is one of my favorite characters because he just laughs at Mrs. Bennett and makes the wittiest comebacks ever! We also were laughing at how Mr. Darcy always asks Elizabeth if her family is in good health.  Meghan decided that it’s code for “I love you!!!”  So now we amuse ourselves by saying “Is your family in good health?” and then giggling.  I LOVE IT!
After finishing 2 episodes we headed over to Grad Bar for live music on Thursdays.  I had a Guinness and enjoyed Ulpha 590 (pretty sure that was their name).  They were really good!!! The lead singer was really cute and had a great voice! Meghan and I were fighting over who could keep him.  Haha :) It was such a good night!
    3. I got bored yesterday and decided to color my duvet with sharpies! It’s just a plain white duvet so it needed some life! It now has some lovely blue swirls, random doodles, a few quotes, and a playing card with the number 23!
    4. The nerf guns are so much fun!! Jen and I ambushed Greg the other night when he made the mistake of keeping his door open.  But then, like the pillock he is, he threw most of the ammo out of the window! Grrrrr! This just means our tactics and ops must be evaluated and altered.  Muahahahahaha >:-D
    5.  I just read Jen’s blog again and I love reading about our adventures here. :) I can’t believe I’ve been here almost 7 weeks!! I got a birthday card from my mom today and it made me think about how I’m actually not spending my 21st birthday in the States.  This may be a good thing :-P Nah I kid, I miss my friends from home! But I’m going to miss my friends from here like crazy when I leave.  I’m already trying to figure out a weekend that I can go to Minnesota and visit Jen!  I’m broke but it must happen!
    6.  I love meeting people from the US here.  Whenever you meet someone and you find out they are from the States, it just sparks an instant conversation and almost mini-friendship.  It usually results in the where are you from, what uni do you go to, what do you think of England, what do you think of classes here, where have you traveled to already etc. It’s strange but I love it :) I can actually say the same for meeting students from Canada!  I never realized how much we really have in common with them.  NORTH AMERICA YEAH! It also made me realize that when my friends from home tease me about basically being Canadian (from Buffalo, hating American football and loving hockey), I now will consider that as a compliment!  I shall take the Canadian flag that I got from Steuben and hang it up when I get back :) I can definitely thank Meghan for that!!!
    7.  Going back to Geneseo after this will definitely be weird…but I’m trying not to think about that now.  I shall think of happy things like the finale party for Pride and Prejudice, Top Gear Live, and the Arsenal v. Wigan game :)
Hope all is well with you and please comment! <3

    8.  I REALLY REALLY REALLY MISS MY CAR

    York and Edinburgh

Well this past weekend was insanely busy but probably my favorite weekend so far :)
Saturday Jen and I went to York for the day through Uni travel (22 quid return on a coach, so not too bad).  When we got there, the bus drive had no idea where he was going so we drove around for a half hour trying to figure out where he was supposed to drop us off.  Alas we finally made it and we headed into town.  The night before I bought 2 Yorkshire passes for us so we could get into all the major sights for free (rather than paying up to 16 quid at some of the places).  We got it for $50 or roughly 30 quid so not too shabby and we definitely got our money’s worth.  We walked along the streets and stopped to grab some food.  I made the mistake of pointing out a music store to Jen and we had to go in! While she went off to look at sheet music and play the piano, I found the flute section.  *sigh* I picked one up and randomly started remembering bits of old songs I used to play in band.  Then I found the piccolo!! Gah, I don’t know why but I still kind of want one.
We eventually left and found our first main thing to do, the York Dungeon.  It was a bit of a frightening sight and we had a picture taken where Jen is pretending to chop off my head.  We went through it and it was not nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be.  Actors led us through pretty much all the bits and it was set back during the plague and other fun times in York’s history.  At one point we were in a courtroom and there was an actor pretending to be the judge.  I was giggling at something he said and he ended up picking me to be the first one to stand trial.  He asked me my name and then where I was from.  When I said I was from the States he said “Well we’re not off to a good start are we?” I was then accused of singing and dancing naked around a fire and other things associated with witchcraft.  I also was accused of saying a spell to summon a man, and apparently when I said the spell the fire exploded and the judge said one of the old guys in the group had appeared.  I was said to have had a look of sheer disappointment on my face.  Oh it was really funny.  I was then given a choice of pleading Guilty - in which case I would be burned at the stake, Very Guilty - I would be drowned after being burned at the stake, or Insanity - but didn’t explain what would happen then.  Obviously I chose insanity and was then ordered to prove it by dancing.  Then shouted at to dance so I did a little jig and everyone laughed at me.  It was good fun :)
We made our way through the rest of the dungeon and back into the sunshine! We headed off to see Clifford’s tower and the Castle Museum. The Museum was really neat especially the part that had a life-size mock up of a Victorian town that you could walk through.  After that we stopped to grab lunch before heading to the York Brewery for a free tour.  It’s a small brewery and the guy who gave the tour was old and quite funny.  He took us through all the steps of making beer and we got to try some of the different malts they use in their beer.  We didn’t get any free beer with it but I bought a bottle of Yorkshire Terrier and their award-winning Ghost Ale to take back home.
We walked back over the bridge to the other side of town to see York Minster.  On the way we stopped at this tiny cafe for hot chocolate.  They put whipped cream and marshmallows on top and served it with a biscuit straw! IT WAS THE MOST DELICIOUS HOT CHOCOLATE I’VE EVER HAD! It was a really cute cafe!  We made our way over to the cathedral. We walked through the crypt and you could see artifacts and parts of the foundation that dated back to Roman times! Jen and I made a wish in the wishing well as well.  After that it was time to start heading back to the bus.  We walked back through town and many places had Christmas lights up and it looked beautiful.  It looked a lot like what you would think a small English town at Christmas would look like.   When we got back we were exhausted and had to be up early the next day to go to Edinburgh.
We got up and took a taxi to the train station.  Our train ended up being delayed for a half an hour so we didn’t get into Edinburgh until 1pm.  We walked around for a while, just taking in all the sights.  Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited.  As we walked along, we came upon this one guy who was playing the bag pipes near the National Gallery and I actually didn’t mind! It just seemed to fit with the scenery and everything.  After that we set off in search of the Elephant house.  When we found it, I pretty much freaked out.  The Elephant House is where JK Rowling spent a significant amount of time writing the early Harry Potter books.  We went inside and I instantly loved it, not just because she had been there.  It was this quirky little cafe decorated with a bunch of paintings, figurines, and drawings of elephants.  It was very cozy.  Jen and I had lunch there and the food was very good! I was speechless for most of it because I couldn’t believe that I was actually in Scotland and sitting in the cafe where my favorite author wrote my favorite series of all time.  Words cannot even describe how I felt.
After I tore myself away from the place, we went to the National Museum (which was free :D) and had a BLAST!!! The bottom floor was filled with lots of interactive exhibits (more for kids, but we all know I’m basically a 10 year-old in a 20 year-old body).  They had an F1 test drive game but there was a long queue of kids and we decided to skip it.  We walked through a lot of really cool exhibits and had a great time!  There was a communications exhibit and there was a bit where you could try and text but on a floor pad using your feet (not t9 or a full keyboard, old school cell phone texting) and what did I text out for all the world to see? “Go Sabres :)” Yup that happened :D Unfortunately, it closed at 5pm so we had to figure out where to go then.  Since it was a Sunday, pretty much everything except the restaurants and pubs closed at 5pm.  We walked around and went to this little cafe for dinner.  I tried haggis and found it to be quite enjoyable.  We walked around some more before heading back to the station.  We sat in this little pub and had a pint before getting on the train back to Lancaster.
Edinburgh is probably my favorite place so far! I also realized that when I return back to the States I will have visited 4 out of the 5 countries that are a part of my heritage. I went to Germany and Switzerland in 2007, I just went to Scotland, and I’m going to Ireland after term is done! All I need to do is go to Sweden, but I’ll save that for the next trip :-)
In other news, Jen and I are going to London next weekend (November 26th and 27th).  I ALSO GOT A TICKET TO GO SEE TOP GEAR LIVE IN LONDON!!!!!!!!! OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes…I am that excited.  If you don’t know what Top Gear is, go on youtube and watch it.  DO NOT WATCH TOP GEAR AMERICA OR TOP GEAR AUSTRALIA!
That seems like a good intro to the wonderfulness that is Top Gear, but if you can, find a full episode and watch the whole thing :D
That’s all I can think of for now! :D
